Dancing Through Sorrow
LONGING FOR CONTENTMENT
IS PRAYER THE ANSWER?
By Ben Joseph
Prayer is a beautiful concept. It is God-ordained. We are commanded to pray without ceasing. We are to ask, seek and knock. However, prayer is much more than a “spiritual 911.” As it is perceived by many Christians, it is a means of team power to change the mind of a reluctant God in the face of unwanted events in life. Prayer as it is practiced among many evangelical Christians, is a twisted version of what Biblical prayer is all about.
• If all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose, why do we make such a distinction between praises and prayer? Isn’t everything in the life of a saint praise?
• Why do we define “good” and “bad” from an earthly perspective, rather than from a heavenly one? If “good” is anything that enables Christlikeness in us, and “bad” is anything that deters us from that process, who gave us the right to determine what is good and bad for us?
• What is the secret to contentment, a sense of peace and rest despite the circumstances of life? Is prayer the answer? Could prayer as it is exercised today hinder the journey to contentment because we are anxious about the answer to prayer?
The secret to Dancing Through Sorrow is trusting God and surrendering our wills to His. It is by learning to live in the arena of grace.
